Cutscene 33: Network status

There hadn’t been any indication during the journey that the Angel meant her harm. Still, Whitley couldn’t let herself relax just yet. This was, after all, the same Angel who’d firmly planted herself at the Dragon Lord’s side in such a short span of time and the same Angel who had supported that phoenix’s actions before the Council. She was dangerous, regardless of how she might try to make herself seem less so by tripping or landing unceremoniously in prickly bushes.

Further, their last leg of the journey was almost complete. That meant that they’d be in the Angel’s lair soon. The Angel would have even more of an advantage there.

Cutscene 32: Things to do, places to be

(Note: So sorry everyone and thank you for being patient! The good news is that the rest of the serial is completely written now. Normal updates resume today.)

Chrys ran her hand along the cold stones of the castle walls as she walked. It was quiet. Too quiet. Oppressively quiet. “Time for something to epically self-destruct” quiet. She could make that happen, probably. She could, but…

…Her lack of interest in pranks was worrying. Was she sick?

Bonus Cutscene 4: The Murder Squad

(Note: This is the first of the two bonus scenes I have planned. This one takes place at the same time as Quest 4.15 and expands a bit on what some of the other characters in the UC world are up to. If you don’t remember who Whitley is, she appeared a couple times during Quest 2 (2.17 and 2.22; I went back and tagged her in them for easy access). I don’t have any plans to make her more of a recurring character as of yet, but I have a bit of a soft spot for her and the Sovreillis crew anyway. The next bonus scene should be coming up soon~)

Whitley landed on the side of an abandoned stone building close to the border between Sovreillis and Rivillyr. One wall had started to collapse, but, though she heard the stones shifting, the building held under her weight. Nevertheless, she made a note to start looking for a new place to perch during patrols that would allow her to survey the border as well as this one. She lifted her head to get a better look at the forests and fields around her. This was the highest point in this area. She could switch to aerial patrols, but then she might miss some signs of danger crossing their borders, like small noises that the sound of a dragon’s wingbeats would overpower.

Even so, she knew that the Sovreillis Lord would prefer her to perform her patrols solely from the air. That way, she’d be done faster and stay safer. In fact, Ophelia had made it clear that she would prefer Whitley not go out on patrols at all. That was one of the few orders that Whitley had ignored during her service as the Sovreillis General. She knew that the main reason she even had this title was because it was the best way for Ophelia to justify keeping her close at all times. If she didn’t work hard to fulfill the usual duties that title carried, others would get suspicious of the nature of her relationship with the Sovreillis Lord.

Quest 2.22: Resolution

The uproar over the demons in that ex-mercenary building had derailed the Fey Council meeting for what Ami estimated was around two weeks. But with no further news about the demon “tea party” coming out of the area, the discussion was really a lot of baseless rumors, speculation, and just general stereotypes and distrust of demons. She was getting restless for something of actual consequence to happen.

Preferably the end of the meeting. She was pretty sure that she and William had been away from home for around a month total at that point. She’d been making it a point ever since their disappearance the year before to keep at least enough money for a couple months’ rent in her emergency savings just in case she anticipated being gone for a while and had to pay in advance. She’d done just that before leaving, so she wasn’t worried about her apartment just yet. But it didn’t make her feel better about being gone so long. And, besides, she had only paid one month in advance. She didn’t want this dragging on much longer, especially if nothing useful was being discussed.

She was just starting to consider asking Zephyr to excuse them from the rest of the meeting when the Dragon Lord called the gathered Fey nobles back to order in order to finish discussing the items on the agenda. Apparently she wasn’t the only one anxious to leave, because the rest of the meeting passed smoothly and even some of the individuals who’d been argumentative in the beginning of the meeting made helpful suggestions. By what she estimated was Friday, four weeks after they first got to Myrrellisein, the meeting was officially drawing to a close.

Quest 2.17: About a Tea Party

By Ami’s calculations, it had been about two weeks to the day since she and William had met Amaryllis outside Reinvale. There still was no clear indication of when the meeting would end and she had no way to contact their boss back in the Mid-grounds in order to give her an update. Not that she’d even know what to say besides apologizing profusely. If Ami was her boss, she’d probably have fired them both long ago. She felt so guilty about taking advantage of their boss’ extreme kindness.

Which was why she was getting annoyed at all the whining and selfishness during that day’s topic of choice (it had also been topic of choice of the day before and looked like it would probably also be the next day’s topic of choice). That topic was the number of guards in the central territory, Myrrellis. Because it was the location of the capital city, Myrrellis was governed jointly by all the members of the Fey Council. Which meant that they needed a majority vote to solve any problems there. Which apparently meant that not much got accomplished regarding Myrrellis. It also meant that many of the territorial lords seemed to think that it was perfectly ok to recruit guards out of the Myrrellis force into their own.
